What is Extreme Cowboy
Race™?
The Extreme Cowboy Race™ was created by Ryan Dohrn of HorseCity.com
and famed horse teacher Craig Cameron. "The idea of the course was
all Craig and the TV aspect came from HorseCity.com. We are a true team" said
Dohrn. Fifteen cowboys and cowgirls began the challenge, but only one was
crowned the Extreme Cowboy Race™ Champion. Viewers have the opportunity
to watch all of the heart stopping action as horse-and-rider teams compete
and are eliminated. HorseCity.com decided to name the event the Extreme
Cowboy Race™ in an attempt to challenge typical reality TV shows
with an infusion of horseback thrills.
"
The course is new for everyone involved," said Ryan Dohrn, HorseCity.com
general manager. "The winners from Sacramento are now in a ranch setting
and there are a few new faces mixed in with the cowboys and cowgirls. As
always, there is a new twist to everyone's favorite obstacles as well as
a couple new ones thrown in there."
Some of the favorite obstacles like the famous Texas Three-Step, log drag
and varieties of jumps were included, but Cameron decided to bring in some
new ones that challenged the riders like never before. At one point each
rider has to strip his or her saddle of the horse and pick up a rider and
double ride bareback. Competitors also had to use some of their roping
skills being asked to rope a green horse. Also this season, there is a
time limit for each obstacle and if a competitor goes over the time limit,
he or she will be ushered on. This season has added more pressure to the
cowboys and cowgirls creating a race that is much more exciting than previous
ones. The winner this time around will truly be able to call themselves
the Extreme Cowboy Race Champion!
The "Extreme Cowboy Race" is a timed race with obstacles designed
to not only push horse and rider out of their traditional comfort zone,
but also test the communication and horsemanship of each team. Judges award
points based on a set of five criteria: 1. Horsemanship, 2. Cadence, 3.
Control, 4. Horse's attitude, and 5. Overall execution. The first round
of competition features 14 horse-and-rider teams. The top eight competitors
move on to Round 2 for another set of competition. The top four competitors
then advance to Round 3 for an all-out race to the finish and the title
of "Extreme Cowboy."

and Saturday evenings at the event. The Extreme Cowboy Race—as
seen on RFD-TV— is a timed and judged race through an obstacle
course that is designed not only to push horse and rider teams out of
their traditional comfort zones, but also to test communication between

A LITTLE BACKGROUND:
The Extreme Cowboy Race was created by Ryan Dohrn of HorseCity.com along
with Craig Cameron, who has designed and hosted several races at his
Double Horn Ranch in Bluffdale, TX, since 2005. HorseCity.com decided
to name the event the Extreme Cowboy Race to challenge typical reality
TV shows with an infusion of horseback riding thrills. Each season Craig
Cameron assembles an impressive roster of competitors from around the
country who compete for the title of Extreme Cowboy Race Champion. The
Extreme Cowboy Race spans 15, 30-minute episodes featuring horse and
rider teams as they complete the various rounds of the race course. The
Extreme Cowboy Race airs on RFD-TV and is also available on HorseCity.com
for those who do not get RFD-TV.
THE EXTREME COWBOY RACE AT EQUINE AFFAIRE:
Although the Extreme Cowboy Race at Equine Affaire is not currently scheduled
to be filmed for broadcast, the competition will include many of the
same elements, excitement, and prizes associated with Craig Cameron's
televised productions in Texas. The Extreme Cowboy Race will take place
in the Covered Arena at Fairplex in Pomona, CA. A maximum of 35 horse/rider
teams will be selected by Mr. Cameron for participation in the race.
The first 20 teams will compete on Thursday evening, January 29th. The
remaining teams will compete on Friday evening, January 30th. The top
ten horse and rider teams plus one wild card team will advance to the
Extreme Cowboy Race finals on Saturday evening, January 31st.
THE RACE COURSE:
The race course will be constructed within the 125' x 230' parameters of
the Covered Arena and will feature obstacles similar to those featured
in previous races as well as several new obstacles designed specifically
for the race at Equine Affaire. The course is likely to include obstacles
and activities such as: saddling the horse, dragging logs, jumping obstacles,
loading into a trailer, backing up through a pattern, pole bending or
roll backs, navigating a log jumble, penning cattle and working gates,
conquering dirt terrain, crossing water obstacles, etc.
OBJECTIVES AND JUDGING:
The Extreme Cowboy Race will be a timed event during which the performance
of each horse and rider team will be judged on each obstacle for quality
of horsemanship. Judges will award points on a scale of 1-10 for the horse
and rider's performance through each obstacle based on the following criteria:
horsemanship, cadence, control, horse's attitude, and overall execution.
Horses and riders will be required to complete each obstacle within a given
time in order to receive points. If an obstacle is not completed within
the given timeframe, the contestant will be flagged and must move on to
the next obstacle. Times will be translated into points, with the highest
overall score winning the race.
